Mechanical Engineer (Non-Met) 9DCC10 (US)

Position Summary

Perform high quality engineering projects and mechanical and material evaluations to meet customer expectations in a timely and cost effective manner. Work independently on special projects and with fellow engineers, scientists, and technicians across departments. Provide knowledge and insight on a variety of materials while designing unique test plans for product and component testing.
 

Major Accountabilities /Deliverables

  • Perform technical analysis in the nonmetallics and mechanical department, with a focus on quality assurance. Organize projects for standardized testing and develop techniques for special projects. Conduct material evaluations of non-metallic materials. Prepare and review reports to ensure quality. Analyze samples using a variety of analytical techniques. Analytical techniques will include the use of a broad spectrum of instrumentation and/or specialty area testing disciplines. Perform all work in accordance with proper work procedures and in accordance with IMR safety guidelines.
  • Train, monitor and coordinate assigned activities of other laboratory personnel in the areas of test set up, sample preparation and date collection to ensure that IMR’s quality and safety standards are met. Review work, distribute incoming jobs, and assure work completion in a high quality and timely manner. 
  • Interface with customers on a regular, proactive basis to ensure that the highest level of customer satisfaction is maintained. Interact with customers to understand and meet their needs and expectations. Conduct or assist in audits and prep.
  • Exhibit and maintain a high level of engineering skills. Keep abreast of developments and technology. Serve as a technical resource for others. 

Qualifications:

2-3 years experience
Education: Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science or related field
Bachelor's Degree (required)
Master's Degree (preferred)
Ability to train and communicate effectively with fellow employees. Demonstrated ability to plan and execute multiple priorities. Strong communication and teamwork skills and ability to work well under pressure and deadlines.

Under minimal supervision, performs moderately complex assignment planning, layout, set up, operating and making tool adjustments for various types of manual, numerically controlled and computerized machine shop equipment. Under minimal supervision, works from blueprints, process sheets and sketches to perform production tasks, which may include the cutting and shaping of metal to precision dimensions. May communicate directly with engineers to understand the purpose of a part assembly. Checks and inspects machining operations against specified tolerances. May identify and repair minor machine malfunctions.

• Manufacture and inspects detailed parts and tools from blueprints, sketches, drawings and verbal instructions using a variety of machining tools and equipment ( mills, lathes, drill presses, grinders, and other machining equipment) and using mathematical and geometrical calculations.
• Determine how to set up machines based on instructions received.
• Perform minor repairs of equipment.
• Keep work area clean and free from safety hazards. Maintain acceptable quality and efficiency level.
• Prove out CNC programs when required.
• Use of CAD/CAM system desirable (i.e. Solidworks, Mastercam, Fusion, etc.).

4-6 years experience required. High School Diploma or Equivalent requried, Technical/Trade School Training preferred.

Mechanical Testing Engineer #3567

Mechanical Testing Engineer

As the Engineer for the Mechanical Testing Department, you will provide engineering support for all mechanical testing at IMR Test Labs in Portland. Perform testing as needed to ensure all testing is completed on time and meets customer and internal quality standards. Ensure all personnel are trained to internal procedures and all equipment is properly maintained and calibrated. Interpret results, develop process improvements, write procedures, conduct internal calibrations.

Responsibilities

  • Provide engineering support for all mechanical testing
  • Technical expert on mechanical testing and applicable ASTM standards
  • Lead weld testing through review of specifications, development of test plans, and review of reports
  • Review purchase orders through the login process
  • Review/correct difficult mechanical test records and review final reports
  • Work with customers to develop test plans and oversee non-routine testing
  • Write mechanical procedures and ensure proper training
  • Complete audit checklists and ensure areas are always audit ready
  • Provide training and development to mechanical testing personnel. Ensure staff is up to date on new and updated/ revised procedures and standards
  • Lead change and Continuous Improvement activities throughout the mechanical department

 

Your Expertise

Strong technical and interpersonal skills. Solid experience in mechanical testing concepts. Excellent presentation skills, both oral and written.

Education & Experience:

  • 2-5 years of experience in technical role or commensurate experience, working in a high-volume testing or manufacturing environment.
  • BS in mechanical, materials science, or metallurgical engineering
  • Experience working with MS Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Outlook)
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Visual Basic experience a plus
  • Weld testing knowledge a plus

 

Working Conditions:

Exposure to medium industrial manufacturing/testing environment. A significant amount of time is spent testing in the lab areas. Exposure to noise, chemicals, high temperatures, and light lifting.
